Private animated GIF optimization
Reduce GIF file size while keeping the animation. Optimize losslessly, choose stronger compression, resize or reduce colors, then inspect the result before downloading.

Try Balanced first. Use Lossless for graphics you want to preserve, or adjust size and colors for stronger savings.
Compare the animation, check bytes saved and the target result, then download one file or a ZIP.
Lossless mode optimizes frame storage while retaining displayed colors and dimensions. Balanced and Smaller file allow controlled pixel changes that may add noise. Custom mode lets you choose the strength. A GIF that was already optimized may not shrink, and the result may even be larger. We show actual byte sizes rather than promise a fixed reduction.
GIF compression uses an animation-specific engine, Gifsicle. Optimization stores changed regions efficiently; lossy settings can trade detail for smaller files. Read the Gifsicle documentation or our lossy versus lossless compression guide for the difference.
Reducing both dimensions often makes a bigger difference than changing compression strength alone. The resize percentage preserves aspect ratio. A smaller color palette can help simple graphics, while photographic animations may show banding. Ordered dithering is optional because its patterns can increase size. These controls are disabled in Lossless mode to keep that mode faithful to the source.
Enter an optional maximum KB target. Lossy modes make up to three attempts, always starting from the original and retaining the smallest output. The tool does not silently shrink dimensions to meet your target. If the result is still too large, reduce the resize percentage, choose fewer colors or accept a larger target. Each result states whether the target was reached.
For ordinary still photos, use Reduce Image Size in KB or JPEG Compressor. For creating an animation from separate pictures, use GIF Maker. This page compresses an existing GIF rather than assembling a new animation.
GIF frames can be partial updates to a previous frame. Their disposal rules determine what is cleared or retained. The engine handles those rules rather than flattening the animation to a single image. Encoded duration and loop settings are checked before a result is kept. Optimization may change frame count while preserving playback. Inspect transparent edges and the complete animation before sharing.
Original and result comparison uses independent browser playback. It is not frame synchronized. Very short encoded delays can also be displayed differently between browsers.
There is no fixed upload size or file-count cap. Large GIFs and high-workload animations show a notification. Browser memory remains a practical limit: many frames can consume far more memory than the compressed file size suggests. Batch compression runs one GIF at a time, and mobile devices use conservative optimization. Cancel stops the current worker; completed results remain available.
The compression engine loads only when you start processing. GIF bytes stay in the browser. ZIP creation also uses memory, so individual downloads are useful for large batches. Files are held for the current session and are not automatically saved after a reload.
Comments and frame names are removed, while animation control extensions are retained. We do not promise complete metadata sanitization. Read about browser processing versus upload tools and why image files become large.
Compression uses the separately distributed Gifsicle engine by Eddie Kohler and contributors, with the browser build from renzhezhilu and wasm-codecs contributors. License notices, GPL v2 license and source and build materials are provided with the engine.
Choose one or more GIFs. Select Lossless, Balanced, Smaller file or Custom, then Compress selected. Inspect the resulting animation, dimensions and actual byte size before downloading.
Lossless optimization preserves displayed colors and dimensions while optimizing how animation frames are stored. Savings depend on the original GIF and are not guaranteed. Already optimized GIFs may stay the same size or become larger.
Yes. This tool processes animation rather than exporting only the first frame. Encoded duration and loop settings are checked before a result is kept. Optimization can merge redundant frames, so the frame count may change. Always inspect motion and transparency.
Enter a target maximum KB value. The tool makes at most three attempts in lossy modes, keeping the smallest result. Lossless makes one attempt. A target is not guaranteed; resizing or reducing colors may be necessary. The result clearly states whether the target was reached.
There is no fixed input byte-size, pixel or file-count limit. Large files and demanding animations show a warning. Browser memory and processing time still impose practical limits, especially on phones. Use individual downloads if creating a ZIP is too demanding.
Resize changes both dimensions proportionally and does not intentionally change timing or looping. Browsers can clamp very short frame delays, so perceived speed can vary between devices.
A smaller palette may introduce banding or change fine details. Ordered dithering approximates missing colors with patterns. It can improve gradients, add visible texture or increase the file size. Inspect the encoded result.
The compressor removes GIF comments and frame names. Animation control extensions, including looping, are retained. It does not claim to remove every possible application extension or hidden data.
Compression runs locally in a lazy-loaded browser worker. GIF bytes are not sent to an image-processing server. Files and results are held in the current session. Download before closing or reloading the page.
No. Original and compressed GIFs play independently. Restart preview helps inspect them, but it does not guarantee frame synchronization. Stop preview hides the running images; Play restarts them.
Choose a GIF, inspect the result and download the size that fits your needs.
