Why iPhone photos do not open on Windows or Android

Since iOS 11, every iPhone saves photos in HEIC format by default. Apple chose HEIC because it stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG while keeping the same visual quality, meaning more photos fit on your phone.

The problem is that HEIC is an Apple format. Windows does not open it without a separate extension. Android cannot open it at all. Most websites, job application portals, government forms and cloud storage services reject HEIC uploads entirely. Converting HEIC to JPG gives you a file that opens everywhere with no additional software.

Sharing with Windows users

JPG opens in every Windows photo viewer, email client and app without plugins.

Uploading to websites

Most upload forms only accept JPG, PNG or WebP. HEIC is rejected by the majority of platforms.

Sending to Android users

Android cannot display HEIC files. Convert first so the recipient sees the photo.

Job applications and forms

Official portals typically require JPG or PDF. HEIC will be rejected.

Why browser-based conversion protects your privacy

Most HEIC converters upload your photo to a server. Your photo then sits on someone else's infrastructure while it is converted and returned. iPhone photos carry GPS coordinates embedded in the file showing exactly where the photo was taken.

This converter runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server. The conversion pipeline decodes HEIC to raw pixels then re-encodes to JPEG, which means EXIF metadata, GPS coordinates and camera information are not present in the output file. Your converted JPGs are clean by default.

You can read more about what GPS and EXIF data your photos contain and why it matters.

How to stop your iPhone taking HEIC photos

If you would rather your iPhone shoot JPG in the first place, change this in Settings:

  1. 1Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. 2Scroll down and tap Camera
  3. 3Tap Formats
  4. 4Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency
  5. 5New photos will now be saved as JPG

This only affects new photos. Existing HEIC photos on your device need to be converted using the tool above.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open HEIC photos on Windows or Android?

HEIC is an Apple format introduced with iOS 11. Windows does not support it natively and Android cannot open it at all. Converting HEIC to JPG gives you a file that opens on every device, browser and app without any additional software.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?

Drop your HEIC files into the converter above. It runs entirely in your browser so there is nothing to install. The converted JPG files download directly to your device. You can also install the free HEIC Image Extension from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC in Windows Photos, but that does not convert them for use in other apps.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. Apple chose it because HEIC stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG while maintaining the same visual quality, which means more photos fit on your phone. The problem is that HEIC is not supported by Windows, Android, or most websites and apps.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

At the default quality setting of 85%, the output JPG is visually identical to the original HEIC at normal viewing sizes. HEIC stores photos at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPEG, so the converted JPG will typically be larger than the original HEIC. The actual image content is not degraded.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser. Your HEIC photos never leave your device. You can verify this by turning off your internet connection after the page loads, conversion still works because everything runs locally.

Does converting HEIC to JPG remove GPS and location data?

Yes, automatically. The conversion decodes HEIC to raw pixels and re-encodes to JPEG. Because the data passes through raw pixel form, no EXIF metadata, GPS coordinates, camera model or timestamps are carried into the output file. Your converted JPGs are clean by default.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple HEIC files at once or select them from the file picker. Each file converts independently. When all conversions are complete, download them individually or as a single ZIP file.

Why is my converted JPG larger than the original HEIC?

This is expected. HEIC is a more efficient format than JPEG. It achieves roughly the same visual quality at about half the file size. When you convert to JPG the output is larger because JPEG is a less efficient codec. Use the quality slider to lower the output size if file size matters.
