What lossless PNG compression actually does
PNG stores pixels in compressed data blocks. The same pixels can often be represented using better filtering, color-type choices, and Deflate settings. OxiPNG tests those alternatives and writes a more efficient PNG without reducing visible image quality.
Strong level is the practical default. Maximum level tries more combinations and can take considerably longer for a small additional saving. If the input is already well optimized, this tool returns the original bytes rather than replacing the file with a larger result.
When PNG is the right format
Keep PNG for logos, interface graphics, screenshots with sharp text, and images that need transparency. Photographs usually become much smaller as WebP, AVIF, or JPEG. Use PNG to WebP when a smaller lossy or modern lossless format is acceptable.
Lossless optimization versus an exact KB target
A lossless optimizer cannot promise a particular file size because it never discards visible detail. If a portal requires a strict limit, use the 100KB compressor or another exact-target tool, which may change format or dimensions to reach the requested ceiling.
