How custom-size compression works
1. Quality search
The encoder tests quality settings to find the clearest result that fits below your chosen ceiling.
2. Smart resizing
If quality reduction is not enough, pixel dimensions are reduced gradually instead of forcing an unusably low quality.
3. Controlled batch
Images run one at a time through a background worker, helping the page remain responsive and limiting memory pressure.
Choosing a useful target size
Use the exact ceiling stated by the destination. A portal with a 100KB limit needs a file no larger than 100KB, while an email or website may allow more room for detail. Picking a much smaller number than required can reduce image dimensions unnecessarily.
JPEG or WebP?
JPEG is the safest choice for application forms, profile photographs and systems with strict file-type rules. WebP often gives a smaller result at comparable visual quality and is a strong choice for websites, messaging and modern applications. If you need lossless transparency, use the PNG compressor instead.
What happens to metadata?
Images that require compression are decoded to pixels and re-encoded, so EXIF and GPS metadata are not carried into those outputs. When a matching-format file is already below the target, the original is preserved without modification, including its metadata. You can inspect it with the image information tool or remove location data separately with the location remover.
