Current upload limits depend on device: mobile video thumbnails must stay under 2 MB and mobile podcasts under 10 MB; desktop supports up to 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcasts. The editor starts with a 2 MB target. These are upload limits, not promises that a design will be accepted.
Custom uploads require a verified account. YouTube currently supports custom Shorts uploads in desktop Studio. For vertical videos, some discovery surfaces may show an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail instead of the uploaded 16:9 version. Review the official instructions when publishing.
Use up to six text layers with editable content, a choice of twelve system fonts, color, outline, alignment and optional solid backing. Click text in the preview to select and drag it, or use its position sliders. Double-click text to type inside its own box. Click outside to finish or press Escape to cancel. A text size dropdown shares one toolbar with preview zoom and guides, keeping the canvas stable during editing. Eight handles scale text proportionally when box width or height changes. Corner handles use the smaller width or height scale factor to avoid stretching letters. Text outside a shortened box is clipped. Add and Delete text are at the top of settings. Delete removes selected text; Ctrl or Command plus Z undoes, and Ctrl or Command plus Shift plus Z redoes. Start with one title and add optional layers as needed. Preview zoom and Fit let you inspect details without changing the export. The left panel holds layers and the small readability preview so the central canvas has more space. Bold, Centered and Clean layouts change styling while keeping your text. Undo and Redo restore recent design changes. Duplicate text and Bring to front help manage overlapping layers; Reset design starts the layout over while retaining the photo.
Fit keeps the full photo visible with padding. Fill covers the canvas and crops excess image content. Zoom and drag adjust framing without stretching the image. A colored border and background shading can help organize a busy scene. To prepare the photo first, try Crop Image, Blur Photo Background or Sharpen Image.
The small preview helps you see whether the subject and title remain understandable. Composition guides include thirds, an illustrative margin and a sample video duration label. They are never exported and are not official safe zones. Long text may extend outside the canvas; shorten it or reduce its size before export.

JPG export automatically searches for a compression quality that fits the selected byte limit. PNG keeps lossless pixels but may be too large. An oversized export is clearly marked and cannot be downloaded from the result panel until you prepare a compliant size. The result preview shows the actual encoded file.
Supported source formats are JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. There is no fixed upload file-size or megapixel limit. Large files or high-resolution images display a warning and may take longer to open; the browser and device memory still determine what can be decoded. The editor normalizes photos to up to two million pixels on mobile or eight million on desktop, with a maximum 4096-pixel side. The 4K video preset is disabled on detected mobile or memory-constrained devices. Fonts use the device’s available system fonts, so appearance can vary between devices.
Photos are processed locally in the browser without an AI model. New exports do not copy source EXIF or GPS data. Work is held in the current session, so download before leaving. If you need to inspect metadata, use Image Information.

For video, this tool offers an efficient 1280 by 720 preset and a desktop 3840 by 2160 option, both 16:9. YouTube currently recommends 3840 by 2160 for videos. Shorts use 9:16; podcasts use a square image. Check the linked YouTube Help page for current requirements.
No. Current YouTube guidance lists 2 MB for mobile video uploads, 10 MB for mobile podcast uploads and 50 MB for desktop video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. This tool defaults to a conservative 2 MB limit. Select the limit that matches your upload workflow.
Choose the portrait Shorts preset. YouTube currently recommends a 9:16 ratio for uploaded Shorts thumbnails and says custom uploads are available in desktop YouTube Studio for verified accounts. The portrait preset here is 1080 by 1920, not the full recommended 2160 by 3840 resolution.

Yes. Click a text layer on the preview to select it, then drag it. Double-click it or choose Type to type directly in the layer. Click outside to finish or press Escape to cancel. Drag any of the eight handles to adjust box width and height while scaling the font proportionally. Text outside the box height is clipped. Preview zoom enlarges the workspace only and does not change export dimensions. Text layers also have position sliders, size, color, outline, alignment and optional backing. The background photo supports Fit, Fill, zoom and position controls.
There is no fixed input file-size or megapixel limit. Large files and high-resolution images show a notification and may take longer to open. Browser memory still limits what can be decoded. The editor uses a reduced working copy for performance. The 2, 10 and 50 MB export targets are separate limits for the downloaded thumbnail.
Lossless PNG can be larger than JPG for photographs. Choose JPG to let the tool reduce compression quality while preserving the selected output dimensions. If the export still exceeds the selected limit, reduce the resolution or simplify the design.
