How to change a photo background

1. Choose your photo

Start with a clear person, product, pet or object. The full workspace opens when the image is ready.

2. Pick your backdrop

Choose Color, Gradient or Photo, then click Change background to separate the foreground. Frame an uploaded backdrop with fit, zoom and position controls.

3. Refine and download

Review hair, edges and gaps. Restore or remove areas with a brush or rectangle, compare the original and result, then save your finished photo.

Pair this with

Colors, gradients and photo backgrounds

Use white for clean product presentations, a brand color for promotional graphics or a two-color gradient for a profile image. Upload a backdrop you own or have permission to use for a new setting.

Choose Fill frame to cover the output, or Fit whole background to keep the complete backdrop with padding. Background zoom and position controls adjust the backdrop without stretching it. The subject retains its original pose and lighting.

Refine the subject without starting over

Automatic selection can miss hair, fur, fine objects and transparent areas. Restore area brings original pixels back, including any original background in that area. Remove area reveals the replacement backdrop.

Paint a correction smoothly, tap a small spot or select a rectangle and apply it. The visible brush and selection show where you are working. Undo brush and Reset edges help you recover from changes.

Choose the right background tool

For a reusable transparent cutout, use Remove Image Background. To retain the original scene with softer detail, use Blur Photo Background. For manually blurring a region, use Blur Image.

Prepare consistent shop images with Product Image Resizer, or add space around an image with Frame Image. Check official rules before changing an identification photo; Passport Photo Checker offers checks and review guidance, not a guarantee of acceptance.

Private processing and mobile performance

Subject detection starts when you request it. Phones use the existing lightweight mobile detector and smaller editing dimensions. For finer boundaries, try a desktop browser and a well-lit source with a distinct subject. The workspace displays the dimensions used for export.

Background replacement does not recreate obscured details, change the subject lighting or generate a scene. Inspect the result before sharing. Downloads permanently combine the selected subject and background into one image, without copying the source EXIF or GPS metadata. JPG and WebP quality controls affect compression; PNG avoids lossy compression.

Subject detection uses BiRefNet with the Studio Ludens ONNX export on desktop and U2-Netp on mobile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the background of a photo?

Choose your photo, select a color, gradient or background image, then click Change background. Review the subject edges, correct them with Restore area or Remove area and download the result.

Can I make the background white?

Yes. Choose Color and the white swatch, then select Change background. This replaces the detected background, rather than just adding white padding around the original photograph.

Can I use my own background image?

Yes. Choose Photo and upload a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF backdrop. Fill frame crops excess background; Fit whole background keeps it visible and adds colored padding. Adjust its zoom and horizontal or vertical position.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

Your photos are decoded and processed in your browser. The subject detection model downloads when you start processing. This tool does not send your photos to an image processing server.

Does it work on mobile?

Supported mobile browsers use a lighter detector and smaller editing dimensions to reduce memory use. A desktop browser can give finer subject edges. Performance depends on the device and photo.

Can I correct missing hair or parts of the subject?

Use Restore area to bring back original pixels, or Remove area to reveal the new background. Tap a spot, paint smoothly or select a rectangle and apply it. Undo brush reverses corrections and Reset edges restores the detected selection.

Can I use the result for a passport or official application?

Check the issuing authority's rules before altering an application photo. Some authorities prohibit background replacement or digital alterations. This tool does not certify compliance or guarantee acceptance.

What size and formats can I use?

Upload JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF up to 40 MB and 50 megapixels. Editing is limited to one million pixels and a 1600-pixel longest side on mobile, or four million pixels and a 4096-pixel longest side on other devices. Download JPG, PNG or WebP at the displayed editing dimensions.
