How to blur a photo background

1. Choose a photo

Use a clear portrait, product image or other photo with a distinct foreground subject. Crop excess space first if the subject is small.

2. Detect and refine

Select Blur background, adjust the strength, then use Keep sharp and Blur area to correct missed edges.

3. Compare and save

Compare the original and result. Download a JPG, PNG or WebP when the subject and background look right.

When background blur helps

Selective blur can draw attention to a person or product and make a distracting scene less prominent. It can work well for profile photos, social posts, product details and presentations when the original subject is in focus.

Blur is a visual effect, not reliable privacy redaction. If you need to hide faces or private details, use Automatic Face Blur and inspect every result. For sensitive information, choose solid redaction there.

Blur, remove or blur a region?

This tool keeps a foreground subject sharp and softens the scene behind it. Remove Image Background creates a transparent cutout that you can put on a new backdrop. Blur Image can soften an entire photo or a manually chosen area.

Choose the effect that matches your final image. Automatic subject selection may need brush corrections, especially around hair, fur, glass and narrow gaps.

Private editing and mobile performance

The workspace opens when you choose a photo. Subject detection starts only when you click Blur background. The processing model loads into your browser for that step. First use may take longer, and the browser may cache the processing files for later visits.

Phones and detected low-memory devices use a lighter subject detector and an editing limit of one million pixels with a 1600-pixel longest side. Other devices use up to four million pixels and a 4096-pixel longest side. The workspace shows the editing dimensions used for the download. You can cancel processing and try another image if your browser runs short of memory.

A downloaded file is rendered from a canvas, so source EXIF and GPS metadata are not copied. Review the finished image before sharing. For a sharper foreground cutout, try a well-lit source image with strong separation from its background.

Subject detection uses BiRefNet with the Studio Ludens 512 ONNX export on desktop and U²-Netp on mobile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I blur just the background of a photo?

Choose a photo, open the workspace, and select Blur background. Adjust the strength and inspect the subject boundary. Use Keep sharp or Blur area, then tap a spot, paint with the brush, or select a rectangle and apply it before downloading.

Does this replace or remove my background?

No. It softens pixels from the original background while keeping the selected foreground sharp. To create a transparent cutout, use Remove Image Background instead.

Will it work on a phone?

Yes, on supported mobile browsers. Mobile mode uses a lighter detector and a smaller editing image to reduce memory use. Review fine edges closely. A desktop browser can give better edge detail.

Are my photos uploaded?

The photo is decoded and edited in your browser. The processing model is downloaded when you request background blur. Your image is not sent to an image processing server by this tool.

Can it find every subject perfectly?

No. Hair, glass, pets, crowded scenes, similar foreground and background colors, and fine objects can confuse automatic selection. The visible brush helps you keep a missed person or object sharp and blur unwanted areas. Inspect the download.

Which format should I download?

JPG works for common photo sharing. PNG keeps the edited pixels without lossy compression. WebP often offers a smaller file, where supported. The export does not copy the source EXIF or GPS metadata.
