  • Supported by all modern browsers since 2020
  • Faster load times and better Core Web Vitals

For most web images, WebP is the better choice. The file size reduction directly improves page load speed, which affects both user experience and search rankings. The Core Web Vitals guide covers how image format choices affect performance scores in detail.

Why WebP is better than JPEG for transparent images

If you have PNG files with transparent backgrounds — logos, product cutouts, interface elements — your only options for smaller file formats are WebP and AVIF. JPEG does not support transparency and fills transparent areas with white, which breaks any design that relies on a clear background.

WebP supports the same full alpha channel as PNG. A product image with a cut-out background that currently ships as a 200KB PNG can become a 100 to 140KB WebP with identical visual appearance and preserved transparency.
