How to make a meme

1

Upload an image

Drop or select your photo. Nothing is uploaded.

2

Top and bottom text

Added automatically. Click to edit the wording.

3

Add custom text

As many extra text boxes as your meme needs.

4

Style it

Font, size, color and outline, per text box.

5

Drag and download

Position each box, then save as JPG or PNG.

More control than a two-box template

Built for actual editing, not just filling in a fixed top and bottom caption.

Top and bottom text, automatically

As soon as an image is uploaded, editable top and bottom text is already in place with the classic white fill and black outline. Just type over it.

Unlimited custom text boxes

Not capped at two lines. Add as many additional text boxes as the meme needs, each one independently positioned, styled and editable.

Drag any text, anywhere

Text is not locked to the top or bottom edge. Click and drag directly on the image to put each piece of text exactly where it belongs.

Eight fonts, including Impact

Impact, Arial, Arial Black, Comic Sans, Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana and Courier New. Change font per text box, not just for the whole meme.

Custom color and outline

Pick any fill color and any outline color per text box, with an adjustable outline width from a thin line to a heavy border, or none at all.

JPG or PNG, no watermark

Download the finished meme with no logo or branding added. PNG keeps a transparent background if your source image has one.

Common reasons to make a meme

Group chat and social posts

A quick reaction image or in-joke for a group chat, Discord server or social feed post.

Marketing and social media content

Meme-format posts perform well on many platforms, and this tool works without a watermark on the output.

Presentation and slide humor

A single well-placed captioned image can lighten up a deck or team update.

Personalized captions on real photos

Add a caption to an actual photo of a friend, pet or moment, not just a stock template.

Supported input formats

JPG or PNG output

JPG for the smallest file size, the right choice for most photos.

PNG when the source image has a transparent background that needs to stay transparent.

Getting the most out of the text tools

Top and bottom text appear the moment an image is uploaded, in the classic Impact font with a white fill and black outline. That default is a starting point, not a limit. Every property of that text, the wording, the font, the size, the color and the outline, can be changed the same way as any custom text box added afterward.

Long lines of text wrap automatically to fit inside the image rather than running off the edge or overlapping the frame. Very long captions may still look cramped once wrapped onto several lines, in which case lowering the font size a little usually reads better than shortening the text itself.

Why the outline matters more than the fill color

A meme photo rarely has a plain, uniform background behind the text. White text alone can disappear over a bright sky, and black text alone can disappear into shadow. The outline is what keeps text readable across a busy or high-contrast photo, which is why the default pairs white fill with a black outline rather than relying on either color alone. Increasing the outline width helps on especially busy backgrounds, while setting it to 0 removes it entirely for a cleaner look on a simple, flat background.

Positioning text precisely

Dragging is the primary way to move text, but it is not the only control. The Reset position button on a selected text box returns it to its original spot, top, bottom or the center for custom text, which is a fast way to undo an accidental drag without retyping anything.

Common meme mistakes

Text running off the edge of the image

Long text automatically wraps onto multiple lines to fit the image width, so this shouldn't happen. If a line still looks cramped, lower the font size slightly or shorten the wording.

Choosing JPG for an image with a transparent background

JPG has no alpha channel. Any transparent area gets filled with a solid color on download regardless of the source file. Use PNG if the background needs to stay transparent.

Not clicking the text before trying to drag it

A text box has to be selected (shown with a dashed blue outline) before it can be dragged. Clicking directly on the letters of a text box selects it.

Assuming top and bottom text can't be deleted

Every text box, including the default top and bottom text, can be deleted from the text list or the editor panel. Clicking Add top text or Add bottom text again afterward creates a fresh one.

Setting the outline color the same as the fill color

The outline exists to keep text readable over busy backgrounds. If the outline color matches the fill color, that contrast disappears. White fill with a black outline is the classic, most readable combination.

Frequently asked questions

Does this meme generator add a watermark?

No. The downloaded meme contains only your image and your text, nothing else. There is no watermark, logo or branding added to the file.

How many text boxes can I add?

As many as needed. Top and bottom text are added automatically when an image is uploaded, and the Add custom text button creates a new independent text box each time it is clicked, with no fixed limit.

Can I move the text anywhere on the image?

Yes. Click a text box on the canvas to select it, then drag it anywhere. It is not locked to the top or bottom of the image, and each text box can be positioned independently of the others.

What fonts are available?

Impact, Arial, Arial Black, Comic Sans, Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana and Courier New. Impact is the default, since it is the font most associated with the classic meme look.

Should I download as JPG or PNG?

JPG produces a smaller file and is fine for most photos. Choose PNG if the source image has a transparent background, since JPG has no alpha channel and will fill any transparent area with a solid color on download.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image, the text and the final rendering all stay on the Canvas API in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server at any point. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.

Can I change the outline color or remove the outline entirely?

Yes. Each text box has its own outline width and outline color. Setting the outline width to 0 removes the outline for that text box, leaving only the fill color.
