Frequently asked questions

What file size does a passport photo portal require?

Most national passport and visa portals require a digital photo between 10KB and 100KB, with 50KB being one of the most common upper limits. Some portals specify a range such as 20KB to 50KB. Check your specific portal's requirements and adjust the target size in the tool accordingly.

Will my passport photo still look acceptable after compression?

Yes. Passport photos taken on modern phones are typically 3 to 10 megabytes. Compressing to 50KB still produces a photo that is entirely clear at the small sizes passport portals display and store it. The binary search algorithm finds the highest quality that fits within the limit.

What format should I choose for passport photo submission?

Choose JPEG. It is universally accepted by all government passport and visa portals. WebP is not accepted by most official government systems.

My photo is a HEIC file from my iPhone. Can I use this tool?

Yes. HEIC is supported as input. The tool decodes your iPhone photo in the browser and re-encodes it as JPEG, which passport portals require. No intermediate conversion step is needed.

Is my passport photo safe and private?

Yes. All processing happens in your browser using WebAssembly. Your photo never leaves your device and is never uploaded to any server. This is particularly important for passport photos, which are sensitive identity documents.

The portal says my photo must be between 20KB and 50KB. How do I set that?

Set the target size to 45KB in the tool. This gives you a result comfortably within the 20 to 50KB range. You can adjust the target to any value using the input field.
