WhatsApp image sizes 2026

WhatsApp compresses images on send. Pre-resizing to the recommended size gives compression the best quality to work with.

Profile photo / DP (recommended)

Displayed as a circle, keep subject centred, away from edges

800 x 800 px

1:1

Status / Story

Full-screen vertical. Keep content in the centre 1080x1420 px safe zone

1080 x 1920 px

9:16

Chat image

Pre-resize to retain more quality after WhatsApp's compression

1280 x 720 px

16:9

Sticker

Exact requirement. Artwork should fit within centre 480x480 px. Convert to WebP under 100 KB after downloading

512 x 512 px

1:1

Business catalog product image

Square format for consistent display in WhatsApp Business catalog

600 x 600 px

Send as Document to skip compression. In WhatsApp, tap the attachment icon, then Document, and pick your image file. WhatsApp will deliver it at full resolution without any quality reduction.

Common WhatsApp resize mistakes

Expecting a custom dimension option

This page only offers the five presets above, there's no field to type in your own width and height. For a custom size, use the general resize tool instead.

Assuming the Sticker preset outputs a ready-to-use WebP file

It outputs a transparent 512x512 PNG, not WebP. WhatsApp requires stickers in WebP format under 100KB, so you'll need to convert the downloaded PNG separately before uploading it as a sticker.

Uploading a transparent image for Profile, Status, Chat or Catalog

Only the Sticker preset outputs PNG and preserves transparency. The other four presets output JPEG, so any transparent background will be flattened.

Sending as Photo when you need full quality

WhatsApp compresses anything sent as a Photo. If quality matters more than preview thumbnails, send the resized file as a Document instead, this delivers the exact file with no additional compression.

Re-uploading for every WhatsApp size you need

You don't have to. After generating one preset, use "Try another size" to produce the rest from the same uploaded image.

Ignoring the upscale warning

If your source photo is smaller than the preset you picked, especially the large 1080x1920 Status size, it gets stretched up to fit and will look softer than a native-resolution image.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for a WhatsApp profile photo in 2026?

The recommended WhatsApp profile photo size is 800x800 pixels at a 1:1 aspect ratio. WhatsApp displays profile photos as circles, so keep faces and logos centred and avoid placing important elements near the corners. The absolute minimum is 192x192 pixels, but anything below 500x500 may look soft on modern high-resolution screens.

What size should a WhatsApp Status image be?

WhatsApp Status images should be 1080x1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio to fill the screen edge-to-edge on modern phones. Keep important text and content within the centre 1080x1420 px safe zone to avoid being covered by the WhatsApp UI elements at the top and bottom.

How do I send a photo on WhatsApp without losing quality?

WhatsApp automatically compresses images sent as photos. To preserve full quality, resize your image to the target dimensions first, which gives WhatsApp's compressor the best starting point, or send the image as a Document instead of a Photo, this bypasses compression entirely and delivers the exact file you selected.

What are the requirements for WhatsApp stickers?

WhatsApp stickers must be exactly 512x512 pixels and saved in WebP format under 100 KB. Leave a 16-pixel transparent margin around the edges so your artwork fits within the effective 480x480 px design area. The Sticker preset in this tool resizes your image to 512x512 as a transparent PNG, you'll still need to convert that PNG to WebP separately before uploading it as a sticker.

Can I enter a custom width and height instead of using a preset?

Not on this page. This tool only offers the five fixed WhatsApp presets above, there's no custom dimension field here. If you need an exact size that isn't one of these five, use the general resize tool, which lets you type any width and height.

Will my image be cropped or stretched to fit a preset?

Cropped, not stretched. If your source image doesn't already match a preset's aspect ratio, for example a landscape photo resized to the vertical Status size, the tool scales it up to cover the target completely and trims the excess evenly from the edges. Nothing is distorted, and no padding is added.

What file format do I get back, JPEG or PNG?

It depends on the preset. Profile Photo, Status, Chat Image and Business Catalog all output JPEG. The Sticker preset is the one exception, it outputs PNG so it can preserve a transparent background, since WhatsApp stickers require transparency around the artwork.

Does transparency survive resizing?

Only for the Sticker preset, since it's the only one that outputs PNG. The other four presets output JPEG, which doesn't support transparency, so any transparent areas in your source image will be flattened for Profile, Status, Chat and Catalog sizes.

Can I generate more than one WhatsApp size from the same upload?

Yes. After downloading one size, choose "Try another size" to generate a different preset from the same image without re-uploading. Useful for producing a profile photo and a status image from a single source photo in one session.

Does this tool guarantee my sticker file will be under 100KB?

No. The Sticker preset resizes your image to the correct 512x512 pixel dimensions, but it doesn't check or enforce a file size limit. WhatsApp's own 100KB sticker requirement applies to the final WebP file, so check the size after you convert the downloaded PNG to WebP, and compress further if needed.

What happens if my source image is smaller than the preset?

The tool upscales it to reach the target size and shows a warning above the result. Upscaling stretches existing pixels rather than adding new detail, so the result may look softer than a native-resolution image. For the sharpest result, start from the highest-resolution version of your photo.

Does EXIF or GPS data survive resizing?

No. The image is decoded to raw pixels and re-encoded during resizing, so EXIF metadata, including GPS location, does not carry over to the downloaded file, for any of the five presets.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Resizing and cropping happen entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your image is never sent anywhere.

What file formats can I upload?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC are all accepted as input. What you get back depends on which preset you choose, JPEG for Profile, Status, Chat and Catalog, PNG for Sticker.
