Snapchat image sizes: which preset should you use?

The Story and profile sizes below are our working recommendations. The image ad size follows Snapchat's published specification. These distinctions help you choose a canvas without confusing a design suggestion with a submission requirement.

ImgTweak recommendation

Story / vertical photo

1080 x 1920

9:16 | JPEG

A practical portrait canvas for preparing a photo for a Story. This is a design recommendation, not a claim that every Snapchat photo must have these dimensions.

Published ad specification

Single image ad

720 x 1280

9:16 | JPEG or PNG

Snapchat's current ad formats page lists this resolution for Single Image or Video Ads. Check your chosen placement in Ads Manager before submitting.

ImgTweak recommendation

Public Profile photo

800 x 800

1:1 | JPEG

A square source with room to adjust the final crop. Snapchat's profile-photo help article explains how to choose and scale a photo but does not specify a pixel minimum.

An editor built around your photo

A dedicated Snapchat workspace

Uploading opens the same full-screen editor used by our other social tools. On desktop, the image stays beside the settings. On mobile, the preview stays above a separately scrolling settings panel.

Framing you can control

The tool fills the selected dimensions with a crop rather than stretching the image. Drag, zoom and position controls let you choose which part of your photo appears in the result.

Useful preview before export

See the source before selecting a size and the processed result afterward. Output dimensions, file size and format appear with the download controls, so you can check what you are saving.

Processing on your device

Image decoding, crop adjustments and resizing run in your browser. Your source photo is not uploaded to ImgTweak. Downloading saves a new file without changing the original.

Get a clearer Snapchat image

Start with a portrait photo

A landscape image must lose a large part of its left and right sides to fill a 9:16 frame. A portrait source gives you more usable detail. If every part of a wide design matters, prepare a portrait composition with space around it before resizing.

Keep text away from screen edges

Leave breathing room around names, prices and logos. Snapchat's interface and the chosen placement can cover parts of a design. This tool does not promise a universal safe zone, so always inspect the preview inside the destination app.

Avoid enlarging a tiny source

Exporting at 1080 x 1920 cannot recreate detail that was missing from a small photo. Use the original camera image when available and avoid repeated screenshots or downloads of the same design.

Choose the output for the artwork

JPEG is the default for photos and usually keeps file size manageable. The PNG ad preset is useful for graphic artwork. A PNG export does not restore detail lost in an already compressed source.

Review the crop before downloading

Changing from a square profile photo to a vertical Story changes which pixels fit. Revisit Adjust framing for each preset, then apply the crop before saving. Keep a copy of the original for future layouts.

Treat resizing as preparation

This tool creates still images. It does not publish a Story, submit an ad, generate a Snapcode, make a video or build an AR Lens. Resizing alone also does not guarantee an ad will be approved.

Add the result to your Public Profile

After downloading, open your Public Profile and use its edit controls to choose a photo from Memories or Camera Roll. Adjust its position and size, then confirm. For an existing picture, use the library option from that picture's controls. Snapchat may apply its own final crop.

The profile preview guide in this tool is only a framing aid. It does not cut a circle out of the exported JPEG. Leave room around your face or logo and check the final appearance in the app.

See Snapchat's profile-photo instructions for the official workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What image size should I use for a Snapchat Story?

The Story preset uses 1080 x 1920 pixels in a 9:16 portrait frame. This is our recommended working canvas for a vertical photo. Review how the image appears in Snapchat before posting, especially if text is close to an edge.

Why is the Snapchat ad preset 720 x 1280?

That is the resolution currently listed on Snapchat's official ad formats page for Single Image or Video Ads. The Story preset is a separate 1080 x 1920 design option. Use the requirements shown for your actual ad placement when submitting.

Is 800 x 800 an official Snapchat profile requirement?

No. It is our suggested square working size. Snapchat's Public Profile instructions describe selecting, moving and scaling a photo without giving a pixel minimum. Use its final crop controls to confirm the result.

Will this stretch my photo?

No. The editor keeps the image proportions and crops to fill the selected size. A wide photo can lose content at its sides when fitted into a tall frame. Use Adjust framing to choose what stays visible.

Can I move the image after selecting a size?

Yes. Open Adjust framing and drag the preview, or use the position and zoom sliders. Choose Apply crop to update the result. If the source exactly fits the frame, zoom in to create room for repositioning.

Can I upload a photo from an iPhone?

Yes. The editor accepts HEIC and HEIF as well as JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. If a particular file cannot be decoded, convert it to JPEG first and try again. The Snapchat presets download JPEG or PNG files.

Can I resize without cropping anything?

These presets fill the selected frame, so a source with a different aspect ratio is cropped. To retain every part of a wide image, first place it on a portrait canvas with padding in an image editor, then use the matching preset here.

Does the circle guide change my downloaded profile image?

No. It is a preview aid for keeping the subject near the center. The exported profile photo stays square, and Snapchat controls its final presentation.

Does ImgTweak upload my image to Snapchat?

No. Resizing happens locally and you download the result yourself. You decide whether to share it through Snapchat, Ads Manager or any other service.
