Tips for creating good favicons from JPEG images

Favicons are tiny -- 16x16 pixels at the browser tab. A complex photograph scaled to that size will look like an unrecognisable blur. Simple, bold graphics work far better. Here is how to get the best results from a JPEG source.

Use a square crop

ICO sizes are always square. If your JPG is not square, the converter will scale it to fill the canvas. Crop your image to a square before converting for the best control over what appears.

Start with a high resolution

Use the largest version of your JPG as the source. The converter scales down to each size, so starting larger gives sharper results at 16x16 and 32x32.

Simple designs scale better

A logo, a letter, or a simple symbol reads clearly at small sizes. Fine details, text, or complex photography will not be recognisable at 16 pixels.

Consider PNG for transparency

JPEGs do not support transparent backgrounds. If you need a favicon with transparency, convert your JPG to PNG first, remove the background, then use the PNG to ICO converter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a JPG as a favicon?

Not directly. Browsers do not accept raw JPEG files as favicons. The ICO format is required for the broadest browser compatibility. This tool converts your JPG to a proper ICO file with multiple sizes embedded, so it works in all browsers and operating systems.

Will my JPG look good as a favicon at 16x16?

Complex photos and images with fine detail often do not scale well to 16x16 pixels. Simple, high-contrast designs with bold shapes or a single letter work best. If your JPG is a logo or graphic, it should scale acceptably. Use the preview to check before downloading.

Does converting JPG to ICO add a white background?

JPEG images do not have transparency, so the source image already has a solid background. The converted ICO will preserve whatever background color the JPEG has. If you want a transparent favicon, convert your image to PNG first using the JPG to PNG converter, remove the background, and then use the PNG to ICO converter.

Is my JPG file uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your image is decoded, resized at each selected size, and packed into an ICO file entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

What sizes should I select?

For a website favicon, select 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48. These cover browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows taskbar use. Add 256x256 if you also need Windows desktop icon support.
